SARIAYA, Quezon, Sept. 28, 2012— More than 100 seminarians from different dioceses in the country gathered in their annual sports fest.
The Sangkan (Isang Angkan kay Kristo) 2012 tourney featured 16 teams from various minor seminaries vying for trophies in major events like basketball, volleyball, chess and table tennis.
The sports fest, with the theme “One Family, One Faith” kicked off yesterday and ended Friday at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Seminary in Sariaya, Quezon.
“In sports, we can show the camaraderie of seminarians with one another,” said Msgr. Tony Viray, Rector of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Seminary.
He said that this is one way of showing “the values of the seminarians from the different seminaries.”
Asked why Sangkan is important, Viray said, “This is our way of uniting the seminarians. They are here not only to compete but most important, to be brothers in Sangkan.
Participating teams include seminaries from the Archdioceses of Manila, Tuguegarao, Lipa, San Fernando, and the dioceses of Laoag, La Union, Vigan, Bangued, Cabanatuan, Bulacan, Antipolo, Sorsogon, Lucena, and Borongan.
“It’s one way of letting them know as future priests that the Church or even the seminary is not confined in the diocese alone,” said Fr. Rey Anthony Navidad, rector of Borongan diocese’s Seminario de Jesus Nazareno.
“The Church is universal and thus, we need to meet our brothers from other places,” he added.
After the two-day athletic meet, the Diocesan Seminary of the Heart of Jesus in La Union was declared as the over-all champion. [Roel Joe E. Abonal]
